Canandaigua warns against illegal roadside signs

A sign on a stop sign might seem harmless, but it can put drivers at risk, according to Canandaigua town officials. Officials say private ads don’t belong on poles, medians, or intersections.

They warn these signs can block visibility, distract drivers, and interfere with traffic control devices. Strong winds can also turn them into hazards.

Town code and New York law protect these public fixtures, and violations aren’t allowed. Officials urge anyone planning signs for a business or event to contact the town’s development office for proper placement and permits.
