Luis Severino turned in the worst start of his career as the New York Yankees (55-50) fell 9-3 to the first-place Baltimore Orioles (64-41) in the series finale on Sunday night.
Severino gave up a career-high nine runs over 3 1/3 innings, seven of which came in the opening frame. The right-hander’s season ERA jumped from 6.46 to 7.49.
Jake Bauers smacked his eighth home run of the season and drove in a run with a double, while Harrison Bader added a sacrifice fly. The team struck out a season-high 18 times and went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Anthony Rizzo recorded his first five-strikeout game of his career.
Ron Marinaccio (2.2 IP) and Albert Abreu (2.0 IP) posted scoreless appearances.
The Yankees will head back to the Bronx to begin a three-game series with the second-place Tampa Bay Rays. The first pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
