Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office issues road safety reminder for spring planting season

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

With the arrival of spring, the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to exercise caution on roadways as local farmers begin their planting season. Increased farm traffic and slow-moving vehicles are expected during this busy period.

To ensure road safety, the Sheriff’s Office offers the following tips:

Slow Down: Reduce speed when approaching and passing farm vehicles. Operators may have limited visibility. Maintain a safe distance from the equipment.

Watch for Wide Equipment: Farm implements may extend into adjacent lanes. Stay alert.

Wide Turns: Be aware that large farm equipment often requires wide turns. Even if it appears that a farm vehicle is pulling over, it might be preparing for a turn.

Yield: Be patient and yield to wide equipment.

Slow Moving Vehicles: Farm machinery typically moves much slower than regular traffic. Look for orange slow-moving vehicle triangles and keep a safe distance.

“Farming in Cayuga County is a vital part of our local economy,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. “Let’s share the road and avoid accidents this season. Safety is NO accident.”
