Cayuga Community College men’s soccer continued its strong start to the season Saturday, scoring twice in the opening minutes before adding another goal after halftime to secure a 3-0 shutout of Jamestown Community College at home.
The Spartans wasted little time establishing control. Freshman winger Alexander Brunotte opened the scoring with an early goal assisted by Scott Gammons and Owen Steedman, giving Cayuga its first advantage of the afternoon.
Just three minutes later, Matthew Twigg doubled the lead. Josh Murray and Gammons combined to set up the sophomore winger, putting the Spartans in command before Jamestown could settle into the match.
Cayuga’s defense maintained the pressure from there, keeping the Jayhawks off the scoreboard and protecting the two-goal advantage into halftime.
The Spartans added to their lead in the second half when Aidan Barrow found the back of the net off another assist from Gammons. The goal completed the scoring and gave Cayuga its second consecutive victory.
Gammons played a major role in the offensive attack, finishing with three assists. Steedman and Murray also recorded assists, while Brunotte, Twigg and Barrow each found the net.
The defensive effort was just as important for the Spartans. Goalkeeper Ben Barnard turned aside four shots to record the shutout as Cayuga improved to 2-1-1 on the season.
The Spartans now face their biggest test of the young season when they return home Wednesday, September 9, to take on No. 1-ranked Mohawk Valley Community College. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
