A ninth-inning comeback wasn’t enough for the New York Yankees, who dropped a 6-2 decision in 11 innings to the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday afternoon at Yankee Stadium. Detroit completed a three-game sweep while New York’s losing streak reached seven games, as the Yankees fell despite forcing extra innings with a spirited late rally.
For much of the afternoon, the Yankees’ offense was silenced by rookie right-hander Troy Melton, who limited New York to two hits over 6.1 dominant innings while striking out seven. Will Warren deserved a better fate after allowing just two runs on five hits across 5.1 innings with seven strikeouts and no walks, but the Yankees couldn’t solve Melton until late. Spencer Jones sparked the first threat with a pinch-hit single in the eighth, though New York stranded the tying runs. In the ninth, Amed Rosario crushed a solo homer before Jazz Chisholm Jr., returning from concussion protocol, singled, stole second and third, then scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Chisholm finished with two hits and two stolen bases, providing the spark the Yankees had been missing.
The game unraveled in the 11th after the Yankees intentionally walked Riley Greene with a runner on third and one out. Camilo Doval then issued back-to-back walks to force home the go-ahead run before Zach McKinstry added an RBI single. A pair of errant throws by José Caballero and Ali Sanchez helped Detroit tack on two insurance runs to seal the sweep.
The Yankees are off Thursday before opening a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins on Friday at Yankee Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with Gerrit Cole set to start for New York against a Twins starter yet to be announced.
