The USMNT just defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in a huge win and officially punched their ticket to the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup. But where there was once pure elation, American soccer fans now are left with a bitter aftertaste of frustration.
Why? Because the team’s star striker, Folarin Balogun, was sent off with a highly controversial red card in the second half.
It was a match that perfectly captured the extreme highs and agonizing lows of tournament soccer. The United States got the job done, but the cost of this victory might just change the trajectory of their World Cup run.
A Rollercoaster Night for Balogun
For the first hour of the match, Balogun was exactly the hero the USMNT needed. Right before halftime, he found the back of the net in the 45th minute, turning in a deflected pass to give the US a crucial 1-0 lead. The stadium was electric, and Balogun looked virtually unstoppable.
Then came the 64th minute. Balogun was battling for a loose ball near the edge of the penalty box alongside Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemović. As the American forward brought his foot down to plant his stride, his cleats accidentally landed squarely on Muharemović’s ankle and calf.
In real-time, it looked like a standard, albeit clumsy, collision. The referee initially waved play on. But the dreaded VAR intervened, urging a second look at the pitchside monitor. Upon review, the referee flashed a straight red card for a “serious foul.”
With that single card, Balogun joined a very exclusive—and infamous—club. He became only the fourth player in World Cup history to score a goal and receive a red card in the same knockout match. The other three? Soccer legends Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldinho, and Garrincha.
The Fallout and Frustration
Being reduced to 10 men for the final half-hour is a nightmare scenario in a World Cup knockout game. Remarkably, the USMNT held their ground. They defended fiercely, and Malik Tillman even managed to score an insurance goal in the 82nd minute to lock down the 2-0 victory.
Despite the win, head coach Mauricio Pochettino was incredibly frustrated with the officiating. He didn’t hold back in his post-game press conference.
“For me, never is it a red card,” Pochettino said. He argued that it was simply an accidental collision—a normal football action with absolutely zero malicious intent.
Captain Tyler Adams backed up his coach and teammate. He pointed out the harsh reality of VAR: when you slow down an accidental step in high definition, it always looks like a brutal, calculated stomp. To the players on the field, it barely looked like a yellow card.
A Huge Gap Against Belgium
Because he received a straight red for a serious foul, Balogun is now slapped with an automatic one-match suspension. Under FIFA rules, the USMNT cannot appeal this automatic ban.
This means the United States will have to face a powerhouse Belgium squad in the Round of 16 without their top goalscorer.
It is a bitter pill to swallow for a team carrying the hopes of a host nation. Now the rest of the squad will have to step up and work out how to keep their World Cup dream alive without their star striker.
