Cayuga Heights Elementary flood repairs face asbestos delay

Flood damage at Cayuga Heights Elementary could take until summer 2027 to fully repair because asbestos must come out first, according to The Ithaca Voice. The delay means the cleanup may stretch through the upcoming school year.

The April 1 storm damaged about 13,000 square feet on the school’s lower level. Ithaca school board members approved a $118,447 asbestos abatement contract Tuesday, with work expected to start in late July and last about three weeks.

The district already approved up to $1.5 million for repairs. Insurance will cover $500,000, while remaining eligible costs could receive partial state reimbursement.
