A major Quebec-to-New York power line abruptly shut down as extreme heat pushed electricity demand higher, according to the Times Union. The outage came at a difficult moment for a grid already facing tighter reliability concerns.
The Champlain Hudson Power Express went offline Wednesday after a technical issue at a converter station in Quebec. The $6 billion line recently began commercial operation and is designed to deliver about 20% of New York City’s power.
Grid officials asked large power users to cut demand Wednesday evening and urged residents to conserve power safely. The outage comes as New York faces shrinking reliability margins and growing pressure on aging power plants.
