Geneva mayor presses absent councilor to resume duties

An empty seat at Geneva City Council meetings has become a growing issue at City Hall, according to the Finger Lakes Times. At-Large Councilor Ahmad Whitfield hasn’t attended a meeting since his Jan. 7 arrest on felony drug charges.

Mayor Jim Cecere said Whitfield continues to receive pay because the city charter doesn’t allow Council to remove him or stop his salary. Cecere said Whitfield also hasn’t responded to Council communications or participated in city business.

Whitfield is due back in Ontario County Court on July 6. If he’s convicted of a felony, he would be removed from office.
