A holiday swim could turn risky fast as harmful algal bloom sightings increase across local lakes, according to WENY. Experts say people should check the water carefully before swimming, boating or letting pets near the shoreline.
Cayuga County health officials confirmed two new blooms on Cayuga Lake in one week, bringing the lake’s 2026 total to three. Experts say swimmers can still use unaffected areas, but they should avoid water that looks like spilled paint, pea soup, foam or blue-green streaks.
Pets face a greater risk because they may drink contaminated water or lick toxins from their fur. Anyone who spots a bloom should report it to the state DEC, while people or animals with symptoms should seek medical help.
