Pittsburgh Road Closures Begin This Weekend as OpenStreets Returns Across Pennsylvania

PITTSBURGH — Another fun OpenStreetsPGH is scheduled for Sunday, June 28, 2026, in Pittsburgh. The popular community festival will shut down several busy streets and turn them into a safe, car-free zone for people to walk, bike, run and enjoy outdoor activities. The event is meant to bring families, friends and neighbors together while promoting healthy living and active transportation. The four-hour celebration is expected to draw thousands of people.

What time does OpenStreetsPGH start and end?

OpenStreetsPGH will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Officially, the event begins at 10 a.m., but the roads will begin closing at 8 a.m. to prepare the route for visitors. Event organizers say all streets should be back open by 3 p.m. after participants safely clear the area and cleanup is finished.

Which Streets Will Be Closed For The Event?

The event is a two-mile course that begins at Market Square in Downtown Pittsburgh. Participants will travel down Forbes Avenue, through the Armstrong Tunnel, over the 10th Street Bridge and end on East Carson Street on the South Side. No vehicles will be permitted on this route at any time during the event. Drivers should be aware that vehicles parked on the closed streets may be towed beginning at 3:00 a.m. on Sunday morning.

How to cross the closed route for drivers?

Drivers will still have several options to cross the event route, even with the road closures. Traffic officials will man selected intersections to help safely clear vehicles through the area. Crossing points will remain open at Wood Street, Smithfield Street, Grant Street and Sixth Avenue. Drivers are asked to allow extra time for travel and expect some delays while the event is in progress.

Why Families Should Go to Open Streets PGH?

OpenStreetsPGH is more than an opportunity to walk or bike. Families are able to stroll through different neighborhoods in a relaxed, traffic-free setting. It encourages people of all ages to get outdoors, be active, and connect with their community. Along the way, local groups and activity zones will often be providing entertainment, fitness opportunities and family friendly experiences.

What happens after this weekend’s event?

There’s another chance next month for those who can’t make it to this Sunday’s festival. Sunday, July 26, is the return of OpenStreetsPGH with a new three-mile route that connects the Strip District and Lawrenceville. Organizers are looking forward to another day of outdoor fun, community activities and safe streets for everyone to enjoy.
