NYSEG and RG&E said Saturday that power restoration was nearing completion after severe thunderstorms and damaging winds affected more than 191,000 customers across New York.
The utilities said fewer than 200 customers remained without service as of the June 20 update, with those outages expected to be restored by Saturday evening.
The storm system brought widespread severe thunderstorms beginning Thursday afternoon and continuing into Friday, followed by an unusually intense and prolonged wind event that caused extensive damage across parts of the companies’ service territories, according to the release.
Crews from NYSEG, RG&E and United Illuminating, a sister company based in Connecticut, continued making final repairs and addressing remaining damage Saturday.
The companies said their first priority during major outages is responding to downed power lines and other hazardous conditions. Customers were urged to stay at least 30 feet away from downed wires and report hazards immediately.
NYSEG customers can report outages, downed wires or hazardous conditions by calling 800-572-1131. RG&E customers can call 800-743-1701.
Customers can also sign up for outage alerts or use the NYSEG mobile app to report and check outages.
