An Auburn attorney’s bid for Congress is hanging by just 23 signatures, according to The Citizen. Independent candidate Todd Sloan faces removal from the November ballot after a state Board of Elections review found he fell short of the 3,500 valid signatures required to qualify.
Election staff determined Sloan submitted 3,477 valid signatures after invalidating more than 1,600 from his petitions. A hearing officer has recommended rejecting his petition, though the state Board of Elections still must make the final decision.
Sloan argues additional signatures were improperly thrown out and says he’s prepared to challenge the ruling in court if necessary. If removed, voters in the 24th Congressional District would choose from the Republican and Democratic nominees this fall.
