Two Binghamton motorcyclists were airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital after authorities said a pursuit that began in Yates County ended with a crash involving an uninvolved vehicle in Ontario County.
The Yates County Sheriff’s Office said deputies attempted to stop two motorcycles traveling north on State Route 14 in the town of Torrey around 5:15 p.m. June 20. Both motorcyclists failed to comply and tried to evade deputies, according to a sheriff’s office release.
As the pursuit entered Ontario County, the motorcycles collided with a southbound sedan on State Route 14 near the Ontario County line, according to Yates County officials. The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office listed the crash location as the area of Smokin’ Pete’s Barbecue at 5286 State Route 14.
The motorcyclists were identified as John A. Chordas Jr., 45, and Trae Salisbury, 31, both of Binghamton. Ontario County deputies said the two were traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to navigate the roadway before striking the uninvolved vehicle.
The occupants of the sedan were not injured, according to both sheriff’s offices.
Chordas and Salisbury sustained serious injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening and were transported by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital for further care.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and Yates County Sheriff’s Office are conducting a joint investigation. The Ontario County Crash Investigation Team responded to the scene and assisted with crash reconstruction.
A portion of State Route 14 was closed for an extended period while the crash was investigated. Charges are pending completion of the investigation, authorities said.
