A major bridge rehabilitation project will close one of Auburn’s key traffic routes for more than a year beginning later this month.
City officials announced that the Lake Avenue Bridge over the Owasco River will close to all traffic on June 29 and remain closed until approximately July 16, 2027, as crews complete a comprehensive rehabilitation of the structure.
The bridge is located on Lake Avenue between Osborne Street and Owasco Street and serves as an important connection between neighborhoods on Auburn’s west side and downtown areas.
City officials said motorists should expect significant traffic pattern changes and longer travel times throughout the duration of the project. A signed vehicle detour will direct traffic along Swift, South, Genesee, Owasco and South Fulton streets.
Pedestrians will also be required to use a detour route utilizing Osborne and Miller streets while construction is underway.
Crane Hogan Structural Systems Inc. of Spencerport was awarded the construction contract for the project. Construction inspection services will be provided by C&S Companies of Syracuse.
The project will also include utility work, with NYSEG responsible for replacing a gas main in the area during construction.
Officials noted that construction schedules remain weather dependent and could change based on field conditions.
The closure is expected to last approximately 12½ months, making it one of the longest-term traffic disruptions currently planned in the city. Residents and commuters who regularly use the corridor are encouraged to plan alternate routes and allow additional travel time beginning June 29.
City officials said additional information about the project and traffic impacts will be provided as construction progresses.
