Odessa-Montour voters approve revised school budget after initial rejection

Odessa-Montour Central School District voters approved a revised 2026-27 budget Tuesday, nearly a month after rejecting an earlier spending plan that carried a larger tax increase.

The revised budget passed by a 279-91 margin, with more than 75% of voters supporting the proposal. School officials needed at least 60% voter approval because the plan’s 6.2% tax levy increase still exceeds the district’s state tax cap of 3.12%.

The approved budget totals $23.15 million and will take effect July 1.

Last month, voters rejected a proposed budget that included a 13% tax levy increase. Because that proposal exceeded the tax cap, it also required a 60% supermajority for approval but failed to reach that threshold.

District officials revised the spending plan following the initial vote, incorporating additional state Foundation Aid and increased prekindergarten aid that became available after the first budget proposal was developed.

Had Tuesday’s vote failed to secure the required 60% approval, the Board of Education would have been required to adopt a contingency budget for the coming school year.

Instead, voters approved the revised plan by a wide margin, allowing the district to move forward with its proposed spending and programs for the 2026-27 academic year.
