New York’s correction officers union is urging the state to delay expanded weekday holiday prison visits, warning that staffing shortages will force more mandatory overtime, according to the Press-Republican.
The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision planned to restore those visits Monday at additional maximum-security prisons and the remaining medium-security facilities.
Union President Chris Summers said officers are already working forced overtime and being denied earned vacation time.
The union said it supports family visits when prisons have enough officers to handle visitor processing, inmate movement and additional posts safely.
It asked the department and Governor Kathy Hochul to halt further expansion until staffing allows officers to keep their scheduled days off.
