Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon is raising concerns about a package of local election law changes approved by the County Legislature, arguing that major changes to government structure should involve greater public discussion and input.
In a statement released Tuesday, McMahon said the proposals have been presented as matters of good governance, but said the focus should be on ensuring the public has a meaningful voice in the process.
McMahon said he plans to review the measures through the lens of the county charter, which has guided county government for more than six decades and provides what he described as important checks and balances for accountability and effective governance.
He said the key question is not which political interests may benefit from changes to the structure of government, but whether the changes ultimately serve the public interest and help county leaders address residents’ priorities.
The county executive did not indicate whether he would support or oppose the proposals following his review.
