Cornell University has selected longtime faculty member Jessica McArt as the next dean of its College of Veterinary Medicine, making her the first woman to lead the college in its history.
McArt, a professor of ambulatory and production medicine and current chair of the Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences, will become the Austin O. Hooey Dean on July 15. Her appointment was approved by both Cornell’s Board of Trustees and the State University of New York Board of Trustees.
McArt will succeed Lorin Warnick, who has led the college since 2016 and plans to return to research and teaching. Cornell Provost Kavita Bala praised McArt’s leadership and experience, calling her the right person to guide the college through future opportunities and challenges.
A Cornell graduate, McArt earned both her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and doctorate from the university after receiving her bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College. She joined the Cornell faculty in 2014 and previously served as section chief of the Ambulatory and Production Medicine Clinic.
McArt said she plans to build on the college’s existing strengths by expanding collaborations across Cornell, advancing research and supporting student education while addressing community and public health needs. The College of Veterinary Medicine is widely regarded as one of the nation’s leading veterinary schools.
