Canandaigua firefighter carries on family tradition spanning nearly six decades

For firefighter and municipal training officer Jake Bement, serving the City of Canandaigua is more than a career — it’s a family tradition that stretches back nearly 60 years.

The Canandaigua Professional Firefighters Local 2098 recently highlighted Bement’s service, noting that he has spent 16 years in the fire service, including the last four years as a career firefighter with the Canandaigua Fire Department.

A Canandaigua native, Bement began his firefighting career as a volunteer with the department before spending six years with a neighboring fire district. Prior to becoming a full-time firefighter, he worked for the New York State Department of Transportation as a health and safety representative covering seven counties.

Today, Bement serves as the department’s municipal training officer, overseeing on-duty training for all four shifts while continuing to perform his regular firefighting duties. He said one of the things he enjoys most about the job is the variety that comes with emergency response, noting that no two calls or buildings are ever the same.

The Bement family’s connection to the Canandaigua Fire Department dates back to 1968. Among Bement’s most memorable experiences was spending two years on A-Shift working alongside his father, retired firefighter Ron Bement, and his uncle, firefighter Matt Bement. Outside of work, Bement enjoys spending time with his wife, Amanda, and their two sons, Charlie and Henry.
