A Wayne County mother accused in a disturbing child abuse case involving her infant twin sons was arraigned Tuesday on felony assault and child endangerment charges, as prosecutors detailed allegations that the children suffered severe injuries before medical care was sought.
Brittany Spicer, 34, appeared in court Tuesday after being indicted on two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of reckless assault of a child and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Prosecutors requested bail, and the court ordered Spicer held on $2,500 cash bail, $5,000 bond or a $25,000 partially secured bond at 10%.
The court also issued no-contact orders of protection for the two victims.
According to court paperwork, Spicer is accused of failing to immediately seek medical attention for the infant boys after they were allegedly abused. Authorities said the children suffered brain injuries, broken bones and severe burns.
The case also involves Camron Douglas, 32, of Clyde, who has previously pleaded not guilty to an indictment charging him with two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of reckless assault of a child, one count of second-degree assault and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Douglas appeared in court Tuesday alongside his attorney. His case was adjourned until June 23 for motion arguments.
Wayne County District Attorney Christine Callanan, who is prosecuting the case, said the allegations have been difficult for investigators and prosecutors alike.
“These cases are never easy,” Callanan said. “But the important thing is that we do our job, focus on the facts and proceed with the criminal prosecution.”
Authorities have not publicly released additional details about when the alleged abuse occurred or the current condition of the children.
