State throws Auburn .2M lifeline in budget

Auburn just landed a major budget break, according to The Citizen, with state lawmakers boosting the city’s aid increase to $3.2 million as officials scramble to close a nearly $5 million deficit.

The funding jumped from the $1.2 million increase proposed earlier this year and comes as Auburn weighs deep cuts, including eliminating 58 positions. The city also continues receiving nearly $5 million in base AIM funding and $200,000 for the Equal Rights Heritage Center.

Mayor Jimmy Giannettino said the one-time funding boost could help stabilize Auburn’s finances as utility, healthcare, and retirement costs keep climbing. The City Council plans public hearings Thursday on the budget and a proposed override of the state tax cap before a final vote expected June 4.
