A planned protest event in Watkins Glen focused on themes of fascism and democracy has been moved up by one day because of an unfavorable weather forecast for Saturday, organizers announced Wednesday night.
The event, organized by Indivisible Hector/Schuyler County, will now take place Friday, May 22 from 6 to 7 p.m. along the sidewalk outside the Schuyler County Courthouse in Watkins Glen.
According to organizers, between 14 and 18 participants will hold signs displaying what they describe as characteristics of fascism on one side and characteristics of democracy on the other. Other attendees are being encouraged to bring and wave flags in support during the demonstration.
Organizers said only the designated protest signs will be displayed during the event.
Heidi Pike, a member of the group’s steering team, said the demonstration is intended as a visual contrast between democratic values and authoritarian traits. Marsha Smith and Pike were identified as spokespersons for the event.
The group had originally planned to hold the demonstration Saturday afternoon before changing the schedule because of the weather forecast.
