A Lyons man already being held on separate charges is facing an additional criminal charge after deputies say he damaged a cell gate while incarcerated earlier this year at the Wayne County Jail.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said deputies arrested 38-year-old Cayne J. Hartman on a charge of fourth-degree criminal mischief tied to an incident that happened Jan. 27 inside the jail in Lyons.
According to investigators, Hartman became irate while incarcerated and allegedly threw an inmate-issued storage bin against a cell gate multiple times, causing the gate to break and stop functioning properly. Authorities said the damage required repairs.
Deputies said Hartman was later transferred to the Monroe County Jail on an unrelated case, prompting Lyons Town Court to issue a warrant connected to the alleged jail damage. On Tuesday, deputies learned Hartman would be appearing in Lyons Town Court under an order to produce and took him into custody on the criminal mischief charge.
Hartman was processed at the Wayne County Jail before being returned to Monroe County custody. He is scheduled to appear again in Lyons Town Court at a later date to answer the charge.
