Canandaigua leaders oppose state biosolids moratorium over cost and landfill concerns

Canandaigua leaders are pushing back against a proposed state moratorium on biosolids reuse, warning it could drive up local costs and create new environmental problems, according to the Finger Lakes Times.

City Council unanimously approved a resolution opposing legislation that would pause the use of treated sewage sludge as fertilizer for five years over PFAS contamination concerns. Officials said the city’s wastewater plant already meets state safety standards and argued the proposal would force municipalities to truck thousands of tons of material to landfills or treatment sites at much higher cost.

Canandaigua produces about 2,000 tons of biosolids annually and has invested $28 million upgrading its treatment facility. City officials warned the moratorium could increase truck traffic, greenhouse gas emissions, and disposal expenses statewide.
