Mets promote Nick Morabito to active roster, designate Austin Slater for assignment in roster shuffle

The New York Mets announced a series of roster moves Tuesday, highlighted by the promotion of outfield prospect Nick Morabito and the designation of veteran outfielder Austin Slater for assignment.

The club also selected left-handed pitcher Anderson Severino to the major league roster before optioning him to Triple-A Syracuse, while right-hander Clay Holmes was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Morabito, 23, receives his first major league call-up after producing a strong season with Triple-A Syracuse. Through 41 games, the outfielder is batting .253/.364/.390 with four home runs, six doubles, one triple, and 14 stolen bases.

He has been particularly effective against left-handed pitching, posting a .936 OPS in those matchups compared to a .702 OPS against right-handers. Over five minor league seasons in the Mets organization, Morabito owns a .769 OPS.

Primarily a center fielder, Morabito has also seen time in both left and right field this year, giving the Mets additional defensive flexibility in the outfield.

Slater, 33, struggled to establish a role during his short stint in New York. The right-handed hitter appeared in nine games — mostly against left-handed pitching — and hit .250/.286/.300 with one double across 21 plate appearances.

The Mets signed Slater earlier this season after he was designated for assignment by the Miami Marlins.
