Gas tax fight heats up in New York and beyond

New Yorkers are paying nearly $4.60 a gallon for gas, according to Spectrum News 1, and now state and federal leaders are clashing over whether a gas tax holiday would actually help drivers.

President Donald Trump said he’s considering a temporary federal gas tax suspension as fuel prices climb during the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict. In New York, some Democratic lawmakers also want the state to pause its gas tax, arguing families need relief while prices stay high.

Others warn the move could backfire. Transportation advocates and highway officials said oil companies could absorb the savings instead of passing them to drivers. They also warned cutting gas tax revenue could hurt road repairs, bridge work, and public transit funding across New York.
