Minor earthquake recorded near Honeoye Wednesday evening

A minor earthquake was recorded near Honeoye on Wednesday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The magnitude 2.3 earthquake occurred around 8:27 p.m. and was recorded at a depth of approximately 3.9 kilometers, or about 2.4 miles underground.


The USGS classified the quake as minor and “sometimes felt,” meaning some residents in the area may have noticed light shaking or vibration. Earthquakes of that magnitude are generally not associated with damage.

According to the USGS, roughly 1 million earthquakes of similar size occur worldwide each year.

No injuries or damage were immediately reported following the event.
