Bird banding event returning to Seneca Meadows Wetland Preserve in June

Bird enthusiasts, families and nature lovers will have a chance to get an up-close look at migratory birds next month during a hands-on bird banding demonstration at the Seneca Meadows Wetland Preserve.

The free event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6, at 8 a.m. at the preserve on Black Brook Road in Seneca Falls. Organizers say a rain date of June 7 has been set in case of inclement weather.

The annual program will once again be led by Andrea Patterson of the Braddock Bay Bird Observatory. Organizers said this marks the ninth consecutive year Patterson has helped lead the educational event.

Participants will learn about bird migration, bird identification, and the scientific process behind bird banding, which researchers use to track bird populations and migration patterns.

Event organizers said the program is open to people of all ages and specifically welcomes families, organized groups, people with disabilities, and members of underrepresented communities. Registration is required because space is limited, though there is no cost to attend.

The event is sponsored by the Seneca Meadows Education Center and the Montezuma Audubon Center. Organizers emphasized that all birds captured during the demonstration will be released unharmed.

The Seneca Meadows Wetland Preserve is located at 1712 Black Brook Road in Seneca Falls.
