Seneca County distributing sandbags as flooding concerns grow along Seneca Lake

Seneca County officials are making sandbags available to residents along Seneca Lake after receiving multiple reports of localized flooding and shoreline erosion tied to elevated water levels.

The Seneca County Office of Emergency Management announced Wednesday that homeowners concerned about flooding impacts can begin picking up sandbags Thursday morning at designated locations in Varick and Lodi.

County officials said sandbags will be available beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Old Varick Fire Department on East Lake Road in Varick and the Lodi Fire Department on South Main Street in Lodi.

Emergency management officials also stressed that neither county nor state agencies have promised financial reimbursement for flood-related property damage. While representatives from the New York State Emergency Management Office have toured affected areas, officials said state resources are currently limited to public infrastructure support.

The county said residents experiencing medical or mobility issues who need help obtaining sandbags can contact 211 for assistance.

Officials encouraged residents in flood-prone areas to take precautions to protect their property as high water concerns continue along Seneca Lake.
