Students in two Wayne County school districts will take a different route to class next week, joining a nationwide effort aimed at promoting healthier habits and safer communities.
Lyons and Sodus schools are set to participate in Walk & Bike to School Day on May 6, part of a broader national campaign encouraging students to walk, bike, or roll to school.
Organizers say the event is designed to highlight the benefits of daily physical activity while fostering a sense of independence and community among students.
The two districts are participating alongside thousands of schools across the country as part of the national Walk & Roll to School initiative, which coincides with National Bike Month.
Local officials say the effort builds on broader health initiatives already underway in Wayne County. Both districts partner with Cornell Cooperative Extension through the Active People, Healthy Wayne program, which focuses on improving student wellness through policy changes and expanded access to physical activity resources.
In Lyons, grant funding has helped the district purchase bicycles used in physical education classes, which will also be incorporated into the event. In Sodus, participation in Walk & Bike to School Day has been added as part of the district’s wellness policy to encourage more consistent physical activity among students.
Organizers say the event is open to the community and aim to bring together students, staff, and residents in a shared effort to promote healthier lifestyles.
