Drone surveys planned along Lake Ontario shoreline to improve flood mapping

Wayne County officials are preparing to deploy drone technology along the Lake Ontario shoreline next week as part of a broader effort to better understand and respond to flooding risks.

The surveys come as water levels continue to rise and communities brace for potential impacts along the southern shore.

According to the Wayne County Emergency Management Office, high-resolution aerial surveys using LiDAR-equipped drones will take place May 4 through May 6 along coastal areas.

Officials say the data collected will be used to create detailed 3D maps of shoreline elevations, vegetation, and infrastructure, allowing for more precise flood modeling and improved mitigation planning.

The technology relies on laser-based sensors capable of measuring distances with high accuracy, helping identify areas most vulnerable to flooding under different lake level scenarios.

County officials emphasized that the drone flights are focused strictly on topographical data and will not capture identifiable personal imagery. The surveys will be conducted by certified pilots in accordance with federal aviation regulations.

Residents along the shoreline may notice a large drone operating at low to mid-altitudes during daylight hours, but officials say the work will not disrupt traffic or local services.

Emergency management officials described the effort as a proactive step to strengthen long-term planning and improve preparedness for future high-water events and extreme weather.
