A looming political map battle is taking shape in New York, according to Spectrum News 1, as Democrats push to redraw district lines mid-decade after a major U.S. Supreme Court ruling weakened voting protections.
Gov. Kathy Hochul and top lawmakers want a constitutional amendment allowing new maps if other states do the same. They say it would counter GOP-led efforts tied to Donald Trump to gain seats before tough midterms.
The plan also targets New York’s redistricting commission, which leaders say deadlocked and failed in past cycles. Republicans argue the move would spark a nationwide gerrymandering arms race. Any change wouldn’t affect 2026 and would take years to reach voters.
