New York targets ‘ghost jobs’, where fake listings trick applicants

Job seekers may finally get relief from misleading listings, according to Spectrum News 1, after the New York State Senate passed a bill cracking down on so-called “ghost jobs.”

The proposal would force employers to say whether they actually plan to fill a posted role—and when. Backers say some companies post fake openings to appear larger or growing, even with no intent to hire.

State Sen. Mike Gianaris pushed the measure, citing studies suggesting about one in seven listings may be fake. The bill would fine violators $2,500, but it still needs approval from the Assembly to move forward.
