Bill shields lawmakers from utility shutoffs

A new proposal would pause utility shutoffs for unpaid lawmakers, according to News10NBC, during New York’s ongoing budget delays.

Assemblymember Larinda Hooks introduced the “Automatic Utility Deferment Act,” which would waive late fees and stop service cuts for state payroll workers during a lapse. But in practice, only legislators typically miss pay when budgets stall, thanks to extender bills.

Critics, including Andrea Bailey, say the measure misses the mark. They argue relief should target residents struggling with rising utility costs—not just the 213 lawmakers caught in Albany gridlock.
