An Emmy-winning actress known for her sharp wit and commanding screen presence will headline one of Cornell University’s signature events for graduating seniors next month.
Jane Lynch, a Golden Globe winner and five-time Emmy Award recipient, will deliver the keynote address at Cornell’s Senior Convocation on May 21 at Barton Hall in Ithaca.
The announcement was made April 27 by the student-run Convocation Committee during a senior class event, highlighting a preference this year for a speaker with Cornell ties and broad appeal. Lynch, who earned her MFA from Cornell in 1984, was selected in part for her energy and connection to the university community.
Convocation is a student-led celebration recognizing the undergraduate graduating class, separate from commencement ceremonies. The event will include performances by student organizations, remarks from university leadership, and a student speaker.
Lynch is widely known for her role as Sue Sylvester on the television series Glee, which earned her a Golden Globe in 2011. She has also hosted “Hollywood Game Night” and currently leads the revival of “The Weakest Link,” earning multiple Emmy nominations and wins across her career.
Her work spans television, film, and Broadway, with credits including roles in “Only Murders in the Building,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and films such as “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and “Julie & Julia.” She made her Broadway debut in a 2013 revival of “Annie.”
Convocation will take place from 1 to 2:30 p.m., with a pre-event celebration beginning at 11 a.m. that includes performances, giveaways, and a class photo. Ticket access will roll out in phases, starting with the Class of 2026.
Cornell’s commencement ceremonies are scheduled for May 23 at Schoellkopf Field.
