The New York Mets designated veteran outfielder Tommy Pham for assignment Sunday following a doubleheader sweep by the Colorado Rockies, ending his return to the club almost as quickly as it began.
Pham’s stint lasted just 14 plate appearances. He went 0-for-13 with a walk and struck out seven times, failing to deliver the offensive spark the Mets were seeking when they selected his contract earlier this month. The 38-year-old had signed a Minor League deal in March and was promoted less than two weeks later.
It marks another brief chapter in what has been a winding stretch late in Pham’s career. He previously appeared in 79 games for New York during the 2023 season before being traded at the deadline. Now in his 13th major league season, he has played for 10 teams and totaled 149 home runs, though his recent production has slipped.
A replacement is already lined up. Will Sammon of The Athletic reported the Mets have agreed to terms with outfielder Austin Slater. The 33-year-old was recently designated for assignment by the Miami Marlins after hitting .174 with a .460 OPS in 12 games.
Slater gives New York another right-handed option as the club continues cycling through veterans in search of steadier production.
