Municipal leaders across New York’s Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River regions will have a new opportunity to strengthen local planning efforts through a free training series focused on turning long-term visions into tangible results.
New York Sea Grant announced a two-part Coastal Community Development webinar series designed to help local officials better understand shoreline dynamics and implement effective land use strategies in waterfront communities.
The series is geared toward supervisors, mayors, code enforcement officers, planners, and other officials involved in land use and development decisions. Organizers say the goal is to bridge the gap between planning and execution, ensuring community goals don’t stall after adoption.
The first session, scheduled for May 26 from 1 to 2 p.m., will focus on coastal processes and how shorelines respond to natural and changing water conditions across Lake Erie, the Niagara River, Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. A second session on June 9 will feature local government leaders sharing practical insights on maintaining momentum and successfully implementing land use plans.
Officials say understanding shoreline behavior and regulatory requirements is critical for communities facing environmental and development pressures. The training is also intended to support ongoing efforts tied to comprehensive planning, climate initiatives and waterfront revitalization projects.
The webinars are free to attend, and registration is available through New York Sea Grant.
