New York State Police have released the identities of those involved in a fatal officer-involved shooting in LaFayette that followed a chaotic and deadly incident involving an erratic driver.
Authorities said Irene M. McIntyre, 46, of East Syracuse, was operating the vehicle that struck multiple people before being shot by a state trooper. She later died at a hospital.
State police identified the trooper who discharged their weapon as Michael A. Sharshon, a four-year member of the force assigned to SP LaFayette. He has been placed on critical incident leave, which is standard procedure.
Investigators also confirmed that Cheryl Miron, 79, of Fayetteville, was killed after being struck by the vehicle. Two additional victims, both men who were attempting to assist at the scene, were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident began around 1:37 a.m. April 12 on Shute Road, where troopers responded to reports of a driver traveling erratically through residential yards. Police said the suspect struck the female victim before their arrival and continued to operate the vehicle in a dangerous manner once troopers were on scene.
According to investigators, the suspect backed into another vehicle when a bystander attempted to stop her, then continued driving in a way that endangered people nearby. Police said she ran over the victim again and struck a second individual despite repeated commands to stop.
A trooper then fired their weapon, striking the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
The incident was captured on body-worn cameras, but officials said the footage will not be released at this time due to the ongoing investigation.
The case remains under investigation by the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, with the New York Attorney General’s Office also responding to the scene.
