Mets’ offensive struggles continue in shutout loss to Athletics

The New York Mets dropped their third straight game and were held scoreless for the 17th consecutive inning in a 4-0 loss to the Athletics on Friday night at Citi Field.

Clay Holmes turned in a solid start before exiting in the sixth inning with left hamstring tightness. The right-hander allowed one run on five hits over 5.1 innings, striking out none and throwing 81 pitches. The lone run came in the third inning on an RBI single from Shea Langeliers after a potential double play was not converted.

New York’s offense struggled throughout, managing six hits and failing to capitalize on limited opportunities. J.T. Ginn set the tone early for the A’s, retiring the first seven batters and allowing just one hit over 4.0 innings with four strikeouts.

The Mets’ best chance came in the sixth when Francisco Lindor and Bo Bichette singled to put runners on the corners with no outs. The rally quickly unraveled, however, as a lineout led to a baserunning out at third before a double play ended the inning.

The A’s broke the game open in the ninth against Tobias Myers, scoring three runs on four hits, including RBI singles from Jeff McNeil and Denzel Clarke. Myers had previously retired eight straight batters before the inning.

Lindor, Bichette and Luis Robert Jr. each recorded hits, but the Mets could not generate sustained offense in the loss.
