DEC Forest Rangers report rescues, prescribed burns and training in latest weekly update

New York’s Forest Rangers responded to a range of emergencies and conducted training and land management operations across the state in recent weeks, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation.

The agency’s latest “Week in Review” highlights search and rescue missions, prescribed burns and specialized training efforts, underscoring the wide scope of ranger responsibilities statewide.

Among the incidents, rangers located two overdue hikers in Greene County after a late-night search, finding them safe at a lean-to following a miscommunication about their trip. In Ulster County, rangers assisted an exhausted hiker off Slide Mountain after challenging weather conditions forced the individual to seek help.

In Rensselaer County, a 16-year-old was rescued from the Hoosick River after jumping from a train trestle and becoming stranded near a waterfall. Rangers and other responders used ropes and a ladder truck to safely extract the injured teen, who was transported to a hospital.

Forest Rangers also conducted prescribed burns in Dutchess and Chenango counties, using controlled fire to manage grassland habitats, reduce invasive species and lower wildfire risk. Officials emphasized that such burns are carefully planned and executed under strict conditions.

The report also noted ongoing training efforts, including airboat exercises in Tioga County to prepare for flood response, and the swearing-in of 17 new ranger recruits as part of the agency’s latest academy class.

State officials said Forest Rangers remain a critical part of New York’s emergency response system, handling hundreds of rescues and wildfire incidents each year.
