Tax liens, EV vehicle purchase headline Canandaigua City Council agenda tonight

Canandaigua City Council will tackle a pair of financially focused resolutions tonight, including a sweeping move to place liens on dozens of properties and a plan to purchase an electric vehicle using grant funding.

The special meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at City Council Chambers in the Hurley Building, with limited business beyond the two resolutions on the agenda.

The most significant item involves the creation of liens on properties with unpaid municipal charges, including water and sewer bills, code enforcement fees, fire inspection costs, and other service-related arrears. According to documents, the total amount tied to delinquent charges exceeds $179,000 across more than 200 violations.

The bulk of that total—over $164,000—comes from unpaid water and sewer charges, with additional smaller amounts tied to code violations, fire inspections, and other municipal services. If approved, the liens would be added to the city’s tax roll and enforced in the same manner as property taxes.

Council will also consider a budget amendment tied to the city’s clean energy initiatives. The proposal would authorize the purchase of a Ford Mustang Mach-E using remaining funds from a Clean Energy Community grant. City officials say about $36,000 remains from the grant, with an additional $15,000 proposed from the city’s capital reserve to complete the purchase and outfit the vehicle for municipal use.

The electric vehicle is intended to replace the city’s aging fire inspection vehicle, while also allowing for a reallocation of existing vehicles within the fleet.

Aside from those items, the meeting includes routine business such as approval of prior meeting minutes and a review of the city’s core values.
