Authorities warn of cold water risks as boating season begins on Seneca Lake

With warmer weather expected, authorities are urging boaters not to overlook a dangerous reality — Seneca Lake water temperatures remain near 40 degrees.

The Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol issued a safety reminder this week, warning that cold water can quickly lead to shock or hypothermia if someone falls in.

Officials emphasized that New York State law requires all boaters to wear a life jacket through May 1, a measure aimed at reducing fatalities during colder months.

Marine patrol officers are also encouraging boaters to take additional precautions, including staying close to shore, checking weather and wind conditions, and informing someone of their plans before heading out.

Authorities recommend carrying a phone or radio in a waterproof container in case of emergency.

The reminder comes as more people are expected to take to the water with improving weather conditions, despite still-hazardous lake temperatures.
