Gov. Kathy Hochul is pushing new legislation to restrict firearms that can be converted into illegal machine guns.
The proposal targets so-called “DIY” modifications and 3D-printed weapons, with support from law enforcement officials.
The plan would require gun manufacturers to design pistols so they cannot be easily modified into automatic weapons.
It would also create criminal penalties for making or distributing 3D-printed firearms and the digital files used to produce them.
The proposal includes requirements for 3D printer manufacturers to block the production of firearm components and mandates reporting of recovered 3D-printed guns.
Officials said the measures are part of a broader effort to address emerging threats tied to illegal gun modifications.
Governor Hochul said, “My proposal would require gun manufacturers who sell in the State of New York to design pistols so they render illegal switches useless, so handguns cannot quickly be turned into machine guns.”
