Tax season opens Jan. 26 in New York

New York’s income tax filing season opens Monday, January 26, giving taxpayers just under three months to file before the April 15 deadline.

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance says that’s when both the state and the IRS will begin accepting and processing 2025 income tax returns. Taxpayers must file and pay any taxes owed, or request an extension, by midnight on April 15.

State officials are again urging eligible residents to use the department’s Free File program, which allows many New Yorkers to file both federal and state returns at no cost through the Tax Department’s website.

Hundreds of thousands of taxpayers already use the service each year. The state says those filers save an average of $269 in tax preparation fees.

“I encourage all eligible taxpayers to take advantage of Free File – a secure, efficient, and free way to file,” said New York State Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller. “To save on tax preparation costs, visit the New York State Tax Department website for a truly free filing experience for those who qualify.”

The Free File program is available in multiple languages and is designed for taxpayers who meet specific income and eligibility requirements.

The Tax Department also encourages filers to prepare early by gathering key documents, considering direct deposit for refunds, and reviewing available income tax credits. Additional filing season resources are available through the department’s online income tax filing center.
