Red Cross warns of winter blood crunch

Holiday slowdowns and winter illness have pushed New York close to a blood shortage, and help is needed now, according to American Red Cross. Officials say supplies haven’t dropped far enough for an official shortage, but donations have tightened statewide.

The Red Cross says type O, A negative, and B negative blood are especially critical right now. Officials point to the holidays and a spike in flu cases as key reasons fewer people donated in recent weeks.

To boost turnout, the Red Cross is teaming up with the NFL. Anyone who donates through Jan. 26 can enter to win a trip for two to the Super Bowl in San Francisco.
