A Bath man is facing multiple charges after police say he stole from a donation box meant for an animal rescue group—and was later found with drugs.
Officers with the Village of Bath Police Department were called to the Tractor Supply on West Morris Street around 4:45 p.m. on October 9 for a reported larceny. When they arrived, they found that a donation box for the Finger Lakes SPCA had been broken into and all the money inside was taken.
Investigators quickly identified a suspect but weren’t able to locate him right away, leading to an arrest warrant.
On October 30 around 1:40 p.m., police—along with a New York State Trooper—found the suspect, 61-year-old Warren Hoffman of Bath, on Wilkes Avenue. Officers say Hoffman was taken into custody and later found with a small amount of crack cocaine.
He’s charged with petit larceny, criminal mischief in the fourth degree, and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree. All are Class A misdemeanors.
Police say this is the second time Hoffman has been accused of stealing SPCA donation boxes from local businesses. He was processed and taken to Steuben County Jail for arraignment, then released.
