Top prosecutors and lawmakers are urging Gov. Kathy Hochul to sign a bill that would let New Yorkers with mental illness transfer their nonviolent criminal cases to a nearby county with a mental health court, according to State of Politics.
Only 26 of New York’s 62 counties have mental health courts, leaving many without access. Supporters say the bill — passed unanimously — would cut repeat offenses and offer treatment over jail time, especially in underserved areas like Ulster County.
Hochul has until year’s end to act. Albany DA Lee Kindlon said the move would save money long-term and help defendants get care, not punishment.
