SNAP work rules sped up, putting NY counties in crisis mode

Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers could lose food stamps within weeks after a surprise Trump administration move accelerated work requirements, according to New York Focus via The Ithaca Voice.

Rules originally set to take effect in March will now kick in by early November, giving counties little time to prepare. Local officials warn they’re understaffed and overwhelmed, as new mandates require verifying that recipients work, volunteer, or study 80 hours a month — or risk losing benefits.

Advocates say the changes will push people deeper into food insecurity just as federal shutdown threats, benefit theft, and SNAP funding cuts pile up. Calls are growing for Governor Hochul to step in with state support.
