New York’s failure to pass a broad data privacy law is blocking progress on regulating AI, lawmakers warned Tuesday, according to Spectrum News.
At an Assembly hearing, experts said residents are bombarded with confusing data consent popups, while companies collect and personalize content without clear opt-out options. Lawmakers want a “blanket” opt-out and stronger rules to help people understand how their data is used.
Supporters of the New York Privacy Act say it’s essential for tackling AI risks, but small businesses worry new rules could trigger lawsuits and create burdens only big corporations can handle.
